2009 Pontiac G8 Test Drive: Rons Review

Today I had the opportunity to test drive the brand new Pontiac G8 Base model.  Overall, the G8’s a looker. With a purposeful stance, flared wheel arches and a nose that makes people look and stare, the Pontiac G8 arrives with equal parts menace and promise. But beyond outward appearances, how does it feel behind the wheel for ordinary real world driving that the majority of people like myself do? I decided to go with the base model which features the 3.6 Liter V6 which cranks out 256HP, good enough for a daily commuter and some spirited driving.

2008 GM Canada National Gas Card Promotion


General motors of Canada Limited is pleased to introduce the 2008 national Gas Card Promotion. This promotion features the “Preferred Price” gas card on selected 2008 models. The Preferred Price card entitles eligible customers to either $0.20/L or &0.40/L savings (depending on the vehicle they purchase or lease) for 2,500 Litres of fuel at participating Petro-Canada stores and selected bulk fuel dealers across Canada.

The Preferred Price gas card will be available to eligible customers with the purchase or lease of an eligible new 2008 GM vehicle with a delivery date between June 19, 2008 and July 31, 2008.

The retail value of the $0.20/L card is $500 and the $0.40/L card is $1000.

The card will remain eligible from the time it is activated until 2,500 litres are purchased. There is no expiry date.

2012 Chevrolet Spark - Fuel Economy - Mini Car

In an effort to strengthen its market position and lessen its dependence on large trucks and SUVs, GM has announced that it will build the 2012 Chevrolet Spark mini car. The announcement took place at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 11. The all-new Spark, a 5-door hatchback based on the Chevrolet Beat concept car that debuted at the 2007 New York Auto Show, was designed and will be built in South Korea by GM-Daewoo. Built on GM’s global mini-car platform, the production version of the new Spark will be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show in March. GM plans initial sales in Europe beginning in early 2010; the Spark is scheduled to arrive in U.S. showrooms in late 2011, according to a GM spokesperson. As the Spark will be a global car for GM, it will be rolled out to other markets following its debut in Europe and North America.

For ‘cute and cuddly’, read ’strong and sharp’ - that’s the message behind Chevrolet Spark’s head-turning looks. Its edgy styling breaks the usual mold for city car design by making no soft, visual concessions about lack of size. Spark continues Chevrolet’s design revolution by bringing exciting looks to products in the value segment.

The crisp lines of the mono-cab body express a wedge-like profile, with the deep glasshouse balanced by prominent side body scallops, sculptured fenders and slim, teardrop headlamp units. The ‘active’ contours of the bodywork are free from rubbing strips or exterior trim.

At the front, the bold twin-port grille leads up to a hood that’s heavily sculpted above the headlamps. Below the grille, the lines of the fog lamp housings and the ‘floating’ lower air intake extend the sense of forward movement. Muscular rear wheel-arches, well filled with a choice of 13, 14 or 15-inch wheels, give the car a crouched, ready-to-go stance.

Rear door handles, disguised to preserve the clean look of those wheel-aches, an integrated rear tailgate spoiler and signature Chevy tail lights with round elements are other design details that add to Chevrolet Spark’s ‘must-have’ appeal.

Purposeful and poised, the Chevy Spark is a city car with ‘attitude’, small yet proud of its size.

Inspired cabin

The progressive design of Chevrolet Spark’s surprisingly spacious cabin has the flair to match its exterior looks. The use of quality materials and an uplevel execution were key interior design requirements, demonstrating that small cars offering big value need not look utilitarian or spartan inside.

Bright and engaging, the interior features an evolution of Chevrolet’s signature ‘dual cockpit’ design. The textured front fascia moldings flow each side of the cabin into the doors, creating a feeling of space that belies Chevrolet Spark’s diminutive size.

Exterior bodywork colors are carried through into the lower fascia and door panels. And the main controls are all highlighted in signature Chevy ice-blue, adding to the cabin’s youthful looks.

A unique, motorcycle-inspired main instrument pod, incorporating a large speedometer and digital tachometer display, is another striking design feature.

The audio, heating, ventilation and navigation displays are all neatly presented in an integrated center stack. A small floor console includes twin cup-holders, ample storage cubbyholes and a gearshift molding finished in aluminum to match the spokes of the steering wheel.

Chevrolet Spark packs a generous 2,375 mm wheelbase into its 3,640 mm long body, which helps to deliver a cabin with class-leading passenger leg and hip room, front and rear. The seats are upholstered in a range of bright, contrasting fabrics, with top-of-line variants even including uplevel French seam stitching.

Despite its minimal rear overhang for ease of parking, Chevrolet Spark offers an above average 170-liter trunk volume, easily increased to 994 liters by lowering the 60/40 split-fold rear seat-back. All four door pockets are large enough to provide useful onboard storage for oddments. Chevrolet Spark’s versatility can be taken a step further by specifying roof rails, a rare option in the segment.

The extensive equipment roster includes: a height-adjustable driver’s seat, tilting steering wheel, electrically-powered front windows, heated front seats, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, electrically-powered and heated door mirrors, a trip computer and ‘anti-freeze’ windshield wipers.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze - Dynamic Four Door Coupe

The all-new gasoline and diesel line-up comprises 1.6 and 1.8-liter, all-aluminum, gasoline engines, and a 2.0-liter turbo diesel unit with 16 valves.

Both gasoline engines feature variable valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust sides. The 1.6-liter engine develops 113 hp/83 kW maximum power at 6,400 rpm and peak torque of 153 Nm at 4,200 rpm.

The 1.8-liter version offers even more responsive performance, with 141 hp/104 kW at 6,200 rpm and peak torque of 176 Nm at 3,800 rpm, including 85% from just 2,000 rpm right up to 6,300 rpm. In terms of power output-per-liter, this engine is among the most efficient on the market.

With manual transmissions, these engines deliver zero to 100 km/h acceleration in 12.5 and 10.0 seconds, respectively, and fuel consumption over the combined cycle of 6.7 and 6.8 L/100 km.

The new, 16-valve, 2.0-liter turbo diesel, developing 150 hp/110 kW, adds power with even greater frugality. Impressive fuel economy - 5.6 L/100 km over the combined cycle - offers a potential driving range of over 1,000 km. It is fitted as standard with a maintenance-free exhaust particulate filter.

The common rail, multiple injection design includes variable geometry turbocharging (VGT). With strong torque of 320 Nm from just 2,000 rpm, this engine enables zero to 100 km/h acceleration in 10.0 seconds, and even more impressive in-gear performance, with 80-120 km/h in fifth gear in 12.5 seconds. It will be joined later in the year by a 125 hp/92 kW version.

The 1.6-liter engine is fitted as standard for base and LS variants, while the 1.8-liter is standard for LT and optional for LS. Both are available with a five-speed manual gearbox or a new six-speed automatic transmission, a segment ‘first’ for Chevrolet.

The 2.0-liter turbo diesel is fitted to LT variants only and the 125 hp/92 kW version will be offered for base and LS. Both these engines are available only with manual transmission.

For all engine applications, a universal front sub-frame, carrying the engine and transmission, is bolted in position via four rubber bushings. This ‘isolated’ mounting helps reduce the transmission of engine vibration and road noise into the cabin.

Interior Design and Features

Conveying a sporty yet warm ambience, the five-seater cabin is typified by harmonious, flowing lines and the application of grained, soft-touch materials. It is a high quality execution that transcends the compact value segment.

Class-leading features include the flush fit of panels, with exceptionally tight gap tolerances, and generous rear passenger leg, head and shoulder room, despite Chevrolet Cruze’s signature sloping roofline.

The core interior design theme is a modern expression of a traditional Chevy styling cue - the signature ‘twin cockpit’ layout of the Corvette, a motif designed to bringing driver and passenger closer to a ’shared’ experience. On each side of the main fascia, there is a choice of colored fabric or grained vinyl panels, which are complemented by matching inserts in the seats and door trims.

The center point for the ‘dual cockpit’ symmetry is a neatly integrated center stack, housing the infotainment and air conditioning displays and controls. It is mounted at a shallow angle and has a flowing, free form which eliminates straight lines and the traditional ‘picture framing’ of panels.

Three-dimensional math modeling was used in the design of the main instrument cluster. The analogue dials are backlit by LED for clear, crisp illumination in white and ice blue.

Compared to the seats of its predecessor, the main improvements for Chevrolet Cruze are the use of a wire mesh construction to distribute weight more evenly, a firmer foam filling and deeper bolstering for the cushions and seat-backs, front and rear.

The fabric upholstery includes high quality French seam stitching that provides excellent durability and eliminates the possibility of a ’stretched-seam’ appearance over time. Leather upholstery, with heated front seats, is an option for the top LT specification.

The range of fore/aft adjustment for the front seats has been extended by approximately 50 mm, giving the longest travel in the value compact segment.

Manually-controlled air conditioning is an option for base and standard with LS variants, while dual-zone automatic climate control is standard with LT specification. A particulate and odor filtration system that cleans the air entering the cabin is standard throughout the range, as is a heated rear screen.

An AM/FM/CD audio system, with RDS digital signaling, an MP3 playback facility and two-color graphic display, is standard for base and LS variants. The LT system adds an in-dash, six-CD auto-changer and a USB socket for an iPod in the center console. A DVD-based Navigation system is offered in all specifications and includes a 7-inch color map display, a segment ‘first’ for Chevrolet.

Suspension, Brakes, Steering

Chevrolet Cruze’s suspension, braking and steering systems have been developed on European roads to meet European driving tastes. Striking a balance between agility and ride comfort, Chevrolet Cruze offers the driver a high degree of ‘connectedness’ while also delivering a relaxed and refined ride character.

Compared to its predecessor, Chevrolet Cruze benefits from a wider ‘footprint’ that contributes to more stable handling. The front track is increased to 1,544 mm (up by 64 mm) and the rear track to 1,558 mm (up 78 mm), while the 2,685 mm wheelbase is 85 mm longer. The proportionately greater increases in track enable an inherently better road-holding capability.

Front suspension is by McPherson strut, with side-load compensation to reduce sliding friction. The front sub-frame provides a firm location for the inboard mounting of the lower A-arms. Hydraulic bushings - a feature commonly found on more expensive vehicles - are used to give a higher degree of ride isolation and a more controlled absorption of road input loads.

At the rear, an advanced, compound crank (torsion beam) layout is used. Apart from enabling consistent wheel camber control, this suspension system offers savings in space and weight that are valuable for a compact segment vehicle.

The beam, double-walled and U-shaped in profile, is attached to trailing links through a patented, ‘magnetic-arc’ welding process. This production technology allows the beam’s thickness and attachment angles to be varied according to different engine and vehicle weights, facilitating the fine tuning of roll-rate and roll-steer characteristics.

Disc brakes, ventilated at the front and solid at the rear, are fitted all round.

An all-wheel, anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction control (TCS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), which controls front-to-rear braking effort, are fitted as standard (EU + 2 countries).

Electronic Stability Control (ESC), also standard (EU + 2 countries), uses both the ABS and TCS functions to gently counteract over-exuberance or misjudgments by the driver. It is also useful in helping the driver keep control during an emergency avoidance maneuver.

The rack-and-pinion steering is hydraulically power-assisted and fast-acting, with less than three turns of the wheel required lock-to-lock.

2011 Chevrolet Volt - Looking towards the future!

Chevy Volt is designed to move more than 75 percent of America’s daily commuters without a single drop of gas. That means for someone who drives less than 40 miles a day, Chevy Volt will use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions.

Unlike traditional electric cars, Chevy Volt has a revolutionary propulsion system that takes you beyond the power of the battery. It will use a lithium-ion battery with a gasoline-powered, range-extending engine that drives a generator to provide electric power when you drive beyond the 40-mile battery range.

Making its European debut at 2008 Paris Motor Show, the much-anticipated production version of the Chevrolet Volt delivers up to 60 kilometers of gasoline and emissions-free electric driving, with the extended-range capability of hundreds of additional kilometers.

“The Chevrolet Volt is symbolic of GM’s strong commitment to the future,” says Rick Wagoner, GM Chairman and CEO. “It features just the kind of technology innovation that our industry needs to respond to today’s and tomorrow’s energy and environmental challenges.”

Form follows function

Working closely with GM aerodynamicists to shape the Chevrolet Volt, design and engineering teams have developed one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in GM’s history. They spent hundreds of hours with the Chevrolet Volt in GM’s wind tunnel, testing and re-testing parts such as the front and rear quarter panels, rear spoiler, side sills and side mirrors. Aerodynamic improvements enabled GM to reach the Volt’s target of driving up to 60 km (MVEG cycle) without using gasoline or producing emissions.

Inside, the Chevrolet Volt offers the space, comfort, convenience and safety features that customers expect in a four-passenger sedan, and it delivers them in a variety of interior color, lighting and trim options unlike any offered before on a Chevrolet sedan. Modern controls and attractive materials, two informational displays, and a touch-sensitive infotainment center with integrated shifter distinguish the Volt’s interior from other vehicles on the market.

Some of Chevrolet Volt’s interior technological features include:

  • Driver-configurable, liquid crystal instrument display

  • Touch screen-style climate and infotainment controls

New era in automotive transportation

The Chevrolet Volt heralds a new era in the electrification of the automobile by creating a new class of vehicle known as the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, or E-REV.

The Volt uses electricity to move the wheels at all times and speeds. For trips up to 60 km, the Chevrolet Volt is powered only by electricity stored in its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. When the battery’s energy is depleted, a gasoline/E85-powered engine generator seamlessly provides electricity to power the Volt’s electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery. This mode of operation extends the range of the Volt for several hundred additional kilometers, until the vehicle’s battery can be charged. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Volt eliminates “range anxiety,” giving the confidence and peace of mind that the driver will not be stranded by a depleted battery.

The Chevrolet Volt can be plugged into a standard household 230v outlet for charging. The vehicle’s intelligent charging technology enables the Volt’s battery to be charged in less than three hours. Charge times are reduced if the battery has not been fully depleted. GM estimates that it will cost less than one euro at night for a full charge that will deliver up to 60 km of electric driving.

Charged up for performance

On the road, the Chevrolet Volt offers spirited driving performance in a remarkably quiet interior. More than 220 lithium-ion cells contained within the Volt’s battery pack provide ample power. The Volt’s electric drive unit delivers the equivalent of 150 hp/110 kW, 370 Nm of instant torque, and a top speed of 161 km/h. The lack of engine noise, combined with special sound-deadening materials, makes the Chevrolet Volt an extremely quiet vehicle to drive.

GM estimates that the Chevrolet Volt will cost about two euro cents per km to drive while under battery power, compared to 12 euro cents per km using gasoline priced at €1.50 per liter. For an average driver who drives 60 km per day (or 22,000 km per year), this amounts to cost savings of €2,200 annually. Using night-time electricity rates, GM estimates that an electrically driven kilometer in a Volt will be about one-sixth of the cost of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle.

The Chevrolet Volt is expected to be built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing facility, subject to GM successfully negotiating satisfactory government incentives. Production is scheduled to begin late 2010 for models in the United States. Pricing has not been announced.


Chevrolet Volt: What is an E-REV?

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is a front-wheel-drive, four-passenger Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV) that uses electricity as its primary power source and gasoline as its secondary power source to propel the vehicle.

An E-REV like the Chevrolet Volt represents a significant departure from conventional hybrids. In a E-REV, the wheels are turned by an electric drive unit, whereas in conventional hybrids the wheels are turned by an electric motor, a gasoline engine, or both. For short trips, E-REVs will run on battery power alone.

For longer trips, additional electricity can be supplied by an internal combustion engine or a fuel cell. The battery and propulsion systems are sized so that when sufficient energy is available from the battery, the engine (or fuel cell) is not required for operation. During this electric only phase of driving, the battery, motor, and power electronics are designed to deliver full performance, acceleration, top speed, hill climbing on electric power alone.

How Chevrolet Volt works

Energy is stored on board in a 16-kWh, “T”-shaped lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack powers the electric drive unit, which is capable of meeting full vehicle speed and acceleration performance while driving the car electrically for up to 60 kilometers (based on MVEG city cycle) without using a drop of gas.   • The Chevrolet Volt operates differently from all other propulsion systems. An electric drive unit (electric motor) drives the wheels at all times and at all speeds. The Volt’s range-extending engine serves only to create electricity to power the vehicle beyond 60 kilometers.
  • Depending on the drive cycle, an E-REV like the Chevrolet Volt will eliminate most initial engine starts and substantially reduce associated vehicle emissions.
  • Thanks to instantaneous torque, the Chevy Volt will be a fun-to-drive car with quick acceleration.
  • At current prices per kilowatt hour, GM estimates that an electrically driven kilometer in a Chevrolet Volt will cost about one-sixth compared to a conventional gasoline vehicle. It is estimated that it will cost about 0.02 euro per kilometer to drive electrically vs. 0.12 euro using gasoline at current prices.
  • Most Chevy Volts are likely to be charged off-peak in the evening or overnight when consumption is lower, potentially further reducing the cost of recharging.
  • Charging the Chevrolet Volt about once daily will consume less electric energy annually than the average home’s refrigerator and freezer units.
  • At a cost of about 1 euro a day for a full charge that will deliver up to 60 kilometers of electric driving, for most owners the Volt will be less expensive to recharge than purchasing a daily cup of your favorite branded coffee.
  • The beautiful aerodynamic design of the Chevrolet Volt production car helps to improve both fuel economy and driving performance.
  • GM’s Board of Directors approved the production of the Chevrolet Volt. The targeted launch date is late 2010 as a 2011 model.
