National Post by Arturo Elias, President, General Motors of Canada
GM celebrated its 100th anniversary on September 16, not so much by looking backward as by focusing on what’s next.
While we’ve all heard about the challenges for manufacturers in the current slowdown in the United States, GM is looking to the future with considerable confidence.
We do so knowing three important things: First, by all accounts GM is making the best cars and trucks in our history - in fact, leading the industry in many new-vehicle award categories. Second, we know our future will be about advanced vehicle technology leadership - and there again GM leads with breakthrough innovations like the Chevrolet Volt electric car that is slated to start production in 2010. And, third, we know GM is not just here to stay, we plan to build upon our global sales growth leadership in China, Russia, latin America - and right here in Canada where GM sells far more cars and trucks than any of our competitors. The Globe and Mail by Jeremy Cato
It was a jarring sight for those who have followed the auto industry over the last decade.
At the crowning moment of an hour-long tribute to the “bigness” of General Motors Corp. - with live video feeds from around the world spouting congratulations on GM’s 100th birthday - vice-chairman Bob Lutz drove a four-door hatchback version of the Chevrolet Volt onto a runway stage much like the ones used by fashion models.
This is what the production version of the Volt will look like in two years, when this plug-in hybrid goes on sale, though GM officials insist the term “hybrid” is a misnomer. The Volt, they say, is an electric car with a range-extending gasoline motor on board - just in case you run out of juice beyond the projected 65-kilometre battery range. The front-drive Saturn Astra is nimble, roomy, comfortable, versatile, thrifty, and affordable—but that’s not what’s really remarkable about this new compact hatchback.
What’s remarkable is that all these positive attributes come through essentially unfiltered from the Opel Astra, which is what you’d be calling this vehicle if you lived in Europe.
The only differences between the Astra built by GM’s German subsidiary for sale in Europe and this new Saturn edition are its badges, minor exterior trim, a rear-seat cup holder, and tuning for U.S. emissions standards.
Well, okay, there’s the matter of choices. The Opel Astra comes in more body styles and offers a number of additional powertrain options, including diesels. Read the rest of this entry »

Ever wish the Chevy HHR would evolve into something more cool than kitsch? What that would be is the Chevy Orlando Concept, a seven-passenger multi-purpose vehicle that will be entering production in Europe sometime in the near future. We sincerely hope General Motors considers selling the production version in the U.S. as a replacement for the HHR, as its slab sides and chunky stance impart a much more grown up and aggressive attitude than Chevy’s current compact people mover. And just like the HHR is based on the compact Cobalt’s platform, the production Orlando will be based on the same platform as the upcoming Cruze, which itself will be sold in both Europe and the U.S. There’s really not a doubt in our minds that the Orlando is being developed to replace the HHR in the U.S. while it simultaneously enters a new segment in Europe for Chevy. As for when the production version will appear, we don’t know. All we know is that this MPV has got a lot of promise.
