Cadillac ATS coming soon to fight BMW 3-Series

posted in Uncategorized |

What it is: A new smaller-than-CTS sedan, coupe, and possibly convertible with a front-engine, rear-drive layout (like the CTS). The ATS is supposed to deliver—because of its more compact dimensions—the dynamics of the vaunted BMW 3-series.

Powertrain: It’s purely speculation at this point—possibly a 2.0-liter, turbo four-cylinder and hopefully the 300-plus-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 from the CTS.

Competition: Acura TL, Audi A4, BMW 3-series, Infiniti G37, Lexus IS, Mercedes-Benz C-class.

Clearly aimed at top dogs like the Infiniti G37 and BMW 3-series, Caddy promises “high-tech engines” for this rear-drive/all-wheel-drive model, which will also be available as a sedan. Cadillac says the ATS will have competitive driving dynamics, which it calls “the price of entry” for the segment. The coupe concept shown looked like a baby CTS, but with less dramatic surface detailing. Like the larger XTS, the ATS’s headlights flow up and back terminating at a point so far back in the front fenders that they make the crazy lights on the current BMW 5-series look tame in comparison. The two-door we saw had a much more conventional roof and trunk layout than the wild CTS coupe.
