GM and Tengzhong Sign Agreement for Hummer Sale

Hummer logoGeneral Motors and Chinese company Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co., Ltd have put their deal in writing. Per the agreement, Tengzhong will receive Hummer’s brand and trademarks, intellectual property related to vehicle designs, and Hummer’s dealership network. Tengzhong will purchase Hummer through an investment entity of which it will hold an 80-percent stake, with a private entrepreneur holding the remaining 20 percent. Other financial details have not been released.

The new, Chinese-owned Hummer will contract production from GM until it can transition to its own plants. That means that GM’s plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, and the AM General facility in Mishawaka, Indiana, will continue to build the H3, H3T, and H2 through June 2011. The new owners will also have the option to extend the manufacturing contracts by one year. The deal must now clear all of the government hurdles here and in China.

GM announced plans to ditch Hummer, Saab, and Saturn as part of its post-bankruptcy restructuring plan earlier this year.

Hummer Dealer Now Selling Guns. Seriously.

Lynch Hummer

One time a couple winters ago, I stood at a monster truck rally with my brothers, decked out in camo pants, Caterpillar boots, a Chevy sweatshirt, and a grimy John Deere hat I’d used to polish a charcoal grille, and belted out Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” at the top of my lungs while scenes of monster trucks flying through the air and barrel-rolling through stadiums played on the jumbotron. Also, we were drunk. At the time, I believed I had just done the most American thing possible. I had just lived America. The beautiful. The spacious skies. The amber waves of Budweiser.

But, compared to what the managers at suburban St. Louis’s Lynch Hummer have come up with, my Monster Jam pilgrimage seems traitorous . . . downright Canadian, even. I may as well have taken a soy-latte-fueled dump on the Constitution. They’ve combined two of the most essential elements of American life into one huge jingoistic orgy. It’s a more natural fit than Cars and Drivers, really. It’s guns and Hummers.

That’s right. With Hummer sales falling off a cliff that all the approach angle in the industry can’t overcome, the dealership has branched out into the sale of firearms. Because what else do you do when you can’t climb a cliff, except shoot at it? Inspired by the brilliance of the move, we actually considered changing our name to Guns and Hummers, but Lynch Hummer already occupies the domain www.gunsandhummers.com. And, we realized, Hummer doesn’t make an M3 for us to fawn over. There’s an H3, but it . . . well, it stinks. But, like the M3, it is available with a V-8. So there’s that.

But we digress. No BMW that we’ve ever heard of has shared a showroom with guns, nor are we ready for the concept of Germans and heavy artillery yet. Dealership owner Jim Lynch says that firearms manufacturers have shown great support for the idea, as rare weapons and ammunition crowd the shelves of a showroom once filled with Hummers that, incidentally, are also becoming rare.

Unanswered questions abound. Will there be a shooting element added to Lynch’s 60-acre off-road course? Will there be any BOGO deals? Will Lynch’s service department help me to mount my firearms to my Hummer? Will they help me mount my Hummer to my firearms? Will they help me fire my arms out of my Hummer, or should I keep my hands and arms safely inside the vehicle at all times? What happens now if Lynch fails to maintain its leading customer-satisfaction rating? The real question, though, is: when China, the likely future home of Hummer, invades the U.S., on which side of the battle will the patrons of Lynch Hummer stand?

REPORT: McNabb left GM premium post for Maserati position

Mark McNabb loves a challenge. After working for General Motors for 13 months leading Cadillac, Hummer, and Saab, McNabb announced his resignation last week as of June 1. His destination, it turns out, is Maserati, where he'll replace former North American CEO Marti Eulberg, Who resigned last month after less than a year on the job.

At GM, McNabb ended up shepherding one of his brands and trying to sell the other two. At Maserati he'll have just one brand to lead and he'll be focused on selling its cars. Maserati sales have done their impression of a sinkhole, falling 48% worldwide and nearly 58% in America, taking revenue numbers with them. We find those numbers a little surprising, but perhaps the coming GranTurismo convertible will help things out. In the mean time, best of luck to you, Mr. McNabb.

REPORT: Cadillac/Hummer/Saab chief Mark McNabb resigns after just 13 months

Mark McNabb, the general marshaling the forces of General Motors' premium channel - Cadillac, Hummer, and Saab - is leaving the company in 10 days "to pursue other job opportunities."

Only 13 months into his stint, McNabb has presumably spent most of his time trying to figure out how to help his company get rid of two of his three brands, something that likely hasn't built much confidence for McNabb in terms of job security. In addition to uncertainty about what the future holds for the premium channel (Cadillac and GM itself), we suspect that the job's responsibilities are ultimately probably not what he he had in mind.

McNabb came to GM after a second stint at Nissan - he had actually been with both Nissan and Infiniti for 20 years, before he jumped off to join Mercedes-Benz in 2005 as head of marketing. After moving over to become head of Benz sales, he returned to Nissan the summer of 2007.

There is no official word yet on where McNabb is headed or who will be his permanant replacement, but in the meantime, Stephen J. Hill, currently the general sales manager of the premium channel, will take over in the interim. Said a Cadillac spokesman, there has been "a lot of positive change here" under McNabb, "and we have a lot of product in the pipeline and so we're well positioned for the future."
