GM’s has -electric driving is possible at speeds under 30 miles per hour, courtesy of GM’s new Two-Mode hybrid drive system. Additionally, the 6.0 litre V8 engine employs some fuel-saving technologies of its own- including Late Intake Valve Closing (LIVC) and Active Fuel Management to de-activate cylinders when appropriate. There’s even a specially tuned exhaust system that takes the hybrid powerplant’s unique characteristics into consideration.
GM says the Silverado Hybrid will allow owners to realize fuel savings even when the truck is fully loaded or towing a trailer. It will be sold on crew-cab bodied trucks in two and four wheel drive. A stability control system, trailering package and locking rear axle are standard on hybrid models.
“The Silverado Hybrid is the newest example of Chevy’s heritage of truck innovation, which stretches back 90 years, and exemplifies Chevrolet’s commitment to fuel solutions,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “Silverado Hybrid will deliver fuel economy comparable to many small and midsize trucks that are equipped with four- or six-cylinder engines - all while delivering the capability customers expect of Chevy full-size trucks.”
Silverado Hybrid goes on sale alongside its twin, the GMC Sierra Hybrid, later this year.
