Mechanics Minute: Why we mandate the use of GM oil filters

GM Oil Filter

Here is a recent concern that one of our service managers would like to point out to unknowing  customers regarding GM oil filters:

“Take a look at the above photo. We had an SRX towed in for a knocking noise. Upon diagnosis, we found a 6″ hole in the engine block. Upon further inspection, we found that the oil filter had collapsed, and the paper from the inside of the filter had stopped up the oil pump inlet. Since the filter was stamped “made in China” we assumed it wasn’t GM. It turns out that the customer had the oil changed at an independent lube joint about 300 miles before the breakdown. The GM filter has a metal “wall” on the inside of the filter, and the “made in China” filter is plastic. Proof that you actually do get what you pay for! “
