Hybrids: Five worries, Five answers

When they’re thinking about buying a hybrid vehicle, people sometimes worry about stuff that’s just silly. Sometimes, though they’re absolutely right to be concerned.

In a survey done in cooperation with Harris Interactive, Kelly Blue Book’s Web site. KBB.com, asked car shoppers who were considering a hybrid and what worried them about the vehicles.

GMs big hybrid SUVs in demand

Winnipeg Free Press by Jim Kerr

GM’s two-mode hybrid powertrain will first appear in full-size sport utilities.  The 2008 hybrid Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon started production this spring and will soon start showing up in select dealer showrooms.  I say select because not every dealer that wants one will be able to get one.  The demand for this new hybrid vehicle is already high and the initial production is limited to only some dealers.  As production increases, other dealers will receive them too.  Here is why they have been in high demand, even before production started. 2009 Cobalt: Dream Chevrolet Lineup

Introduced in 2005, the Cobalt was a dramatic improvement over its predecessor, the Cavalier. It truly was a huge step forward for GM in the small car segment. As it stands, the current Cobalt is a competent small car but with all the changes that have came about at GM over the past few years, GM could put forth a class leading effort at a compact. There is a lot of potential for appealing to the Gen Y youth market that Toyota has been trying to capture with its Scion brand. The current model has some of what it was intended to do and the SS in particular has met success with the youth market. Every model has its place, but each brand has its core pillar models. For the Chevrolet car lineup, the Cobalt is one of those pillars.

2010 Chevrolet Malibu When Consumers Digest named Chevrolet Malibu as one of its 2009 Best Buys, it was only reinforcing what drivers across Canada and the United States have discovered for themselves: namely that Malibu provides a unique combination of distinctive styling, extraordinary fuel effi ciency and exemplary quality. No wonder Malibu has won more than 30 prestigious awards, including the 2009 Best New Family Vehicle* from Kelley Blue Book and why AUTOMOBILE Magazine in February 2009 wrote: “ … Drive one, and you will see why we've named it an … All-Star winner two years in a row.” It shows you what happens when you bring together trend-setting design and innovative<br /> engineering. The car that sets the standard for all other mid-size sedans. The 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. IT’S NOT JUST THEIR “BEST BUY”.

That’s why, during the development of the new Malibu, we ventured to a wide variety of global locations – from Australia to Germany to Sweden. Included was the circuit with a reputation as the toughest in the world: the Nordschleife course at Nürburgring. What was learned on those tracks made Malibu’s handling dynamics even more stable and precise. Key technologies include a 4.5 link independent rear suspension, traction control and anti-lock brakes, with input provided by microcomputers, accelerometers and stability sensors. A three-mode StabiliTrak® system is included on LS and LT models, while SS models add a fourth competitive mode for sanctioned racing events. The stiff, ultra-high-strength steel chassis structure further enhances the suspension tuning while contributing to the comprehensive occupant protection. A technological tour de force – proven on test tracks around the globe and driven by some of the world’s elite test drivers. The track ahead is now clear. The wait is over. You’re next. TESTING, TESTING ONE-TWO-THREE.

They give you a high level of command over a series of Malibu’s functions. A good example is provided by the six-speed automatic transmission on 2LT and LTZ models. It includes TAPshiftTM manual shift control with paddles on the steering wheel that enables you to select the desired gear for performance-like driving or to address specifi c road conditions. There are also steering wheel controls for the sound system on all but LS models. All these controls allow you to make adjustments without taking your hands off the steering wheel. And you can use the available three-prong 110-volt household power outlet to plug in your electronic devices. Sophisticated controls for a very sophisticated car. EVERYTHING IS UNDER CONTROL.

2010 Beat: Dream Chevrolet Lineup

The Beat was one of the 3 Triplets introduced by GM to “gauge consumer reaction” to this emerging North American market segment. Well, the reason was very positive to say the least, and certainly one that has surprised many at GM. A website created with GM asking American to vote on which one they liked best. The Beat won, with the Groove taking the second place spot. Because of this and other factors, GM has announced that the Beat will be going into production. At Chevrolet, being the mainstream brand for GM, it’s important to have a little of everything and anticipate future market trends. As a novelty, the Beat could takeoff, and eventually gain importance because of fuel prices. We felt that this car is a very important car in the Chevrolet plan and that’s why it’s been included in our Revitalization in Action line up. The focus is on what we could do to improve on the Beat and make it more production ready.
